Titus Canyon Road, Death Valley - 2007

This shot was a little more technically difficult than most of my shots. I recognized that because of the dynamic range of values here I would have to make two exposures: one for the highlights and one for the shadow detail. I combined them in Photoshop using a layer mask. Not sure if this qualifies as HDR as I didn't use an HDR program.

Thanks for telling us about how you did it, I've always wondered whether it's possible to pull it off, and you did!! it is difficult when you have such clear skies and deep shadow. Lots of lovely texture, and yes - I do want to visit!

This is really awesome! Taken plenty of shots before I had a computer which were disappointing because of the same lighting conditions. You did a wonderful job of layering and getting the best result. I just love rocky places to photograph and you have captured the texture of every rock down to the smallest piece of gravel. :-)
