Amanda from Blenheim, New ZealandWow amazing landscape looks like mars or something 4 Aug 2007 5:07am @aggie: If I remember the story correctly, a group of early California settlers took a short-cut across Death Valley. Only a few survived the journey. When they made it to the other side they looked back and named it Death Valley because of all those that died in the heat. Helen from Melbourne, AustraliaOK, this one made me say WOW out loud when it came up on the monitor. The black and white really accentuates the texture and tones of these tortured ridges. Spectacular Craig. I noticed a comment someone made previously about a Death Valley coffee table book. Not a bad idea. 4 Aug 2007 7:12am Andrew Gould from Sydney, AustraliaBeautiful composition and tones. Excellent exposure choice, with the highlights well captured. 4 Aug 2007 8:22am Lorraine from CanadaThe textures, the shapes...wow...quite an impact! Thanks for this really nice shot !!! Great job. 6 Aug 2007 6:45am Ken McCoy from Orlando-Daytona Beach, FL, United StatesAnother stunning landscape! Please share more information: what kind of processing do you do? How do you get such crisp images? Are these aerial or do you drive/hike to the mountaintops to get these? Inquiring minds... 6 Aug 2007 3:52pm @Ken McCoy: Hi Ken! Thanks for the complement! Starting off with beautiful landscape certainly helps. I find I do my best work when I'm inspired! For this shot, I traveled by car to get here and walked about 500 yards to the top of this look out platform. Then I hopped a wall and hiked out to a better location. I arrived on the scene about 30 minutes before dawn. I almost always use the slowest "film speed" available and always use a tripod. I meter my subject with a "gray card". I also really love the Carl Zeiss lens on my little Sony H-5. I believe all these thing contribute to the results I'm getting. On the processing side, I adjust the levels. I use two or three different adjustment layers for the conversion: the channel mixer, the hue/saturation, and gradient map. finally, I burn and dodge as needed. I hope this helps! John from Oakville, CanadaThanks for visiting my site. I am amazed at your B & W's. Truely masterpieces. 6 Aug 2007 4:23pm Martine Lapointe from Quebec, CanadaIt's a superb serie.
