@Observing: I believe I planted "California Reds" and "Walla Walla" onions. I don't think they are special by any means. However, the photo is of the upper portion of the onion plant with the flower head at the top. The actual onion is a bulb (root) that grows underground. Thanks for all your comments Observing!

I didn't know that onions had flowers, very interesting indeed.
