@DaveB: There is no recent evidence of fire here. What you may be noticing is the black soil/rock which is the result of relatively recent volcanic activity. Hat Creek is only 30 miles from Mt. Lassen.

Wow, I can't get past that sage growing up the rise. I bet it smells great to be there in person. On a roat trip to Wyoming, my son and I found vast expanses where this sage was everywhere. The smell and the look of it has stayed with me ever since.
